Swinging axles is called the new suspension of the Mercedes 170 and means thereby in principle front a double wishbone suspension, which is formed by each with a transverse leaf spring above and below. While there is still one more wishbone with bumper, but rather is provided for the case of breakage of one the multi-leaf springs. A single-joint swing axle is mounted rear. It is used here for the first time and accompanies the following models for quite some time until about 1968. It is clearly to see at the positive camber of the wheels during rebounding. This disadvantage confront the at the driven rigid axle significantly lower unsprung masses.
The 170 is one of the first models that were created after the fusion of Daimler and Benz. Its radiator grille decorates even the trident star (Daimler), which is surrounded by a laurel wreath (Benz). It comes in time to the economically difficult years as a small Mercedes, because in the depression, sales of luxury cars become more and more difficult. Spite of six cylinders are moderate dimensions and consumption.
