Camber






Assignment

To improve the road-holding of the outer wheels when the vehicle leans over to one side when cornering. The angle of the wheels in relation to the road surface remains almost the same, regardless of the various degrees of spring compression. Thereby, the tyre surface maintains the full road surface contact.

Function

The camber describes the angle of the wheel in relation to the perpendicular. It is described as positive when the top of the wheel slants outwards and negative when the slant is inwards. A positive camber actually only occurs on the inside curve front wheel. When driving in a straight line, the camber is zero or slightly negative. During spring compression it becomes more negative according to the inclination angle of the body-work. The most favourable situation is, that the wheel remains, over it's entire width, in contact with the road surface. Only in the case of a rigid axle at the rear, does the camber always remain zero. Too much negative camber has an unfavourable influence on the straight-line directional stability.

The wider the tyres are, the smaller the deviation from zero camber should be.
