Manufactured1934 - 1936

Take a look at the top of the technical data, the evelopment of performance between 1934 and 1936. That is perhaps one partial answer to the question why this type of car is so very successfully. It arises at a time, as Germany slowly shakes a little the recession and the National Socialists support massive the car industry and also especially the racing sector. Now, 500.000 RM for Mercedes and 300.000 RM for Auto Union will have covered by far not all costs, but they have even accelerated the development. In addition, the pressure from the governors in German victories, at least with regard to the brand.

Furthermore, a new formula comes in the regulations, the standard racing car make mobile again from before 1934, so what will bring more security. It will be only 750 kg. Expected to yield smaller and therefore less powerful engines. Of course, in vain. Never before has there been such an explosion of performance and as a consequence also speed records. One comes with streamlined forms to more than 400 km/h.

Should be noted still the only serious competitor, Auto Union, which can afford with a subsidy of the German Reich a(independent) Ferdinand Porsche. So a conventional compressor-Mercedes compete, at whose development Porsche has as chief engineer an important part until 1928, against a from Porsche directly designed mid-engine car from Auto Union, which anticipates with its technology already a little of the later development.

One can divide the glorious past of the two rivals in several phases. After thoroughly bungled rehearsals wins Mercedes with von Brauchitsch, the (first) Eifel race. Here, the historical event have occurred, where the colour of the car must be sanded to come under the 750-kg limit. The colour of German racing cars supposedly changes from white to silver. Curiously, however, the Auto Union Type C runs already earlier around with its silver-coloured outfit.

No legend is in any case the success of W 25 in 1935. Young persons in Germany adore Rudolf Caracciola, in Remagen (D) born German despite his foreign sounding name. Seven wins, one second and third place secure him the title of European Champion, then to put on a level with World Champion. It's his year and the previously successful competition of e.g. Bugatti and Alfa is nearly without chance.

1936 will carried out on the W 25 again significant changes. It is by no means a Mercedes-year but that of the other 'Silver Arrow'. Porsche has "taught it manners" with the help of Auto Union engineers even in the (unusual) driving behaviour. Higher performance is breathed into the 16 cylinders and it is added in the figure of Bernd Rosemeyer an exceptional driver.

1937, however, Mercedes definitively made its way. The racing department has been reorganized and is now under the leadership of another, legends forming chief engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Of him will be to hear still a lot even after the war. He is said the ability to combine technical understanding with very good driving skills. With considerably more engine performance and an improved chassis one goes into the season.

Here, finally, the term 'Silver Arrow' was born. It should be the creation of a radio reporter at the Grand Prix of Germany on the Nurburgring. Mercedes finished this on the first two places and also made once again this year so many victories, that it's enough for Caraccciola's second title win. End of the year the Silver Arrow seperates, but its name is still well known over the incipient war time. 10/11
