1973 is presented the New Generation of Daimler-Chrysler, as the company is now called. For Mercedes, it is the high time of the V-6, V-8 and V-12 engines with many equal components. Because the turbocharger has not yet accomplished the truck sector, naturally aspirated engines with a lot of displacement are necessary. Therefore, also in the picture shown, actually relatively lightweight car transporter eight cylinders for 176 kW (240 hp).
At it may be seen what progress has been made until today. Namely 1973, also near to the oil-price crisis and so great efforts of the industrialized countries to become less dependent on oil. At significantly increased efficiency, the average consumption of a heavy truck decreased for about a quarter.
Of these, however, the NG-series does not yet know. It is connected with the final disappearance of the short hood vehicles andover the following years the introduction of various cabs. Typical of the series are the running diagonally forward and down, bottom side window line and the two deflectors on both sides of the radiator grill.
From the transport company will be the logistics company. Trucks with towing vehicle and trailer are slowly disappearing. Instead of these, trailer trucks conquer the world, because they can be loaded on the one hand more flexible and are on the other hand more agile when maneuvering, particularly in backward driving. A good example is the transporter shown above, which can carry at least 10 mid-or even 11 small cars.
Even for the eternal problem of brake adjustment a firm connection is more convenient between the two vehicle parts. In addition, in the course of the NG series also appears the anti-lock braking system on the market, by the way together with the air suspension for the lighter class. From 1980, once again, a series of innovations is introduced, which are identified through the initials 'NG 80'. One achievement of this period is the four-axis technology. 10/11
