Mercedes dares, albeit in the form of a modern-looking front. Four lights are now the measure of all things. This has already occurred before, in the 220 S with its existing obligatory auxiliary headlights. Admittedly here are the extra headlights integrated correctly and do not look like retrofitted. Incidentally, they are also occupied in the subsequent models a permanent place, although sometimes square and not always completely separated.
This series is the first that comes out directly with the new class term. Only since 2 years, there is the E-Class. Previously, the E is a symbol for the injection system, which have of course now all on board. New compared to the as W-124 created predecessor, the longer wheelbase, from which mainly benefits the passengers in the rear. The car also has to grow, to make room for the pushing forward C-Class. Thus, the success model of Mercedes is described curtly from the ouside, but fairly typical. In addition to the once noble interior, one then could turn to the rich available drivetrain alternatives. It is the time of incipient innovation in diesel engines. No, the carbon blacks when accelerating will you still not break, but they are more economical and efficient.
Direct injection is the magic word. It appears late at Mercedes and the first time in a 2.9 liter six-cylinder. Despite only two valves per cylinder, it seems superior to its smaller "cousins" with four-valve technology. The higher ranked E 300 D, it surpasses even in spite of 100 cc less displacement with an almost one and a half times torque. Why this 300 D is yet available at all? And since at Mercedes the diesel engines are traditionally low in relation to the purchase of petrol engines, they will recommend little by little with the new technique, even into the S-Class. And as a Mercedes traditionally less good accelerate than drives fast, yet another connection is given to the diesel engine. Nevertheless, should nothing be said against the petrol engines, which incidentally at that time take a small development pause between the successful emission control and upcoming CO2 reduction. With every Mercedes although increases the price, but one also obtains a more complete standard equipment. Nevertheless, one creates the feat, that the options list will be always a little longer. It is a time of special designations for additional equipment. Thus the basic equipment is now called 'Classic' and the next two 'Elegance' and 'Avant-garde', which of course has to do little with the actual meaning of the terms. It adorns just better, if you bought instead of GLS the Avantgarde equipment.
Actually you need nothing of it, because you can order individually the important things. And this includes undoubtedly the traction control, xenon lights and also the air conditioning system, because without them later the car is absolutely unsaleable. Almost as bad would be a petrol four-cylinder or the manual transmission. A Mercedes pays off something better, if we subtract from the original price the used car price. 10/11
