'The fascinating combination of sculpturally sensuous coachwork (or components) and the clear geometry of the basic architecture gives the impression of an avant-garde design-language.' This is an exerpt from the manufacturer's text, whereby everything is actually said, wouldn't you think? Don't be alarmed, we won't be carrying on in this vein, so stay with us. Of course, what we have here is an enhancement of the best there is, if that's at all possible. To carry the new design over to the luxury class, and what's more, into the coupé and then to project this above everything else, appears to have really succeded. The above text is quite right. To describe the car as simply being 'chic', is definitely just not enough. Basically, the new front-end reaches right back to the rear wheel-housings. Having got there, it disappears over the wheels (see picture 1). Up front, the edge actually sparks off the lighting strip. This however, is also not quite true, since it carries on below the radiator-grille (see picture 7). These by the way, are the daytime-driving-lights, made up of 17 Swarovski-crystals, and in addition, 30 for the indicators. Somehow, the glitter is tranferred from the radiator-grille to the headlights and vice-versa. No, big, beefy wheel-housings at the rear are mega-out! It was discovered very painfully in just one class lower down, just how expensive it is, to get rid of them again. In this S-Class coupé, it's more the front wheel-housings that are accentuated. At the back, the upper lateral beading no longer plays a role. As in the saloon car, the strongly accentuated fold is broken by the cut-out of the wheel-housings, it then carries on into the bumper section. The rear-end, because of the more horizontally placed tail-lights, gives the impression of being much more filigree than the saloon, this feature is also shared by the boot-lid and the mudguards. The rest simply can't simply be mentioned in passing. We'll pick out only the standard panorama-roof, with it's more than 1,3 m² surface area, which can be darkened to suit one's preferences. Naturally, a sun-shade may nonetheless, not be missing. Then we take a look underneath the rear bumper section, where a high-gloss black spoiler is to be found. 02/14
