The picture shows the Cabriolet A, thus a two-seater with two windows in contrast to the Cabriolet B as four-seater with four windows, etc. For example there is also a six-seater Cabriolet F. In addition to the shorter wheelbase, there is still the 290 with long wheelbase. Overall, it should have had with 18 the largest number of variants at Mercedes. The closed also include a Pullman version.

The Type 290 is produced since 1933, is the successor of the Mannheim and predecessor of the 320. It is the first mid-size car of Mercedes with the modern technology of the now successful 170. Its low-floor frame is completely closed and has only six transverse members. On it rests a body of vaporized beech wood whose covering of steel sheet is fastened by fine nails. The heads of the nails are tinned to protect against ingress of water.

Completely in contrast to its predecessor and the other Mercedes models in the middle and upper class are the high efforts with the undercarriage. Rear is installed a two-joint swing axle with four coil springs. It is the forerunner of the later two single joint versions with initially higher and then lower pivot point. Front there are in addition to the transverse leaf spring below about their inner pivot point protruding, slender wishbones which in addition internally support at wishbones.

The engine allows this design the necessary space and moves according to the back. It has, in contrast to the later post-war model a seven-bearing crankshaft but still vertical valves. 1936 has become out of 44 kW (60 hp) just 50 kW (68 hp) inter alia by increasing the compression, what the car allows well 100 km/h, too fast for the roads of the time.

The car makes a tremendous impression. Apart from its exterior, that usually is enhanced by additional headlamps and Bosch horns, internally it looks almost more dignified by processing of real leather and wood. Only the instruments in the middle are a feast for the eyes, even if they are supplemented by a tachometer. The trafficator is operated there too, a sign of how relatively rare it is needed.

At the steering wheel there is only the horn ring and the gearshift lever. Is a small lever added, then it makes possible via vacuum operation an additional change of the transmission ratio at the countershaft and thus theoretically three gears, but practically rather one gear more. Later, the whole is combined to four gears. After all, the upper gears are already synchronized.

Interesting the further interior. Practically nothing is adjustable at the seats and at the steering wheel in any case not. The folding top is probably not easy to be packed. Therefore, the windscreen can be folded. Somewhat provisionally look the windscreen wipers, which incidentally are mounted sometimes below and sometimes above the window frame, depending on the model. After all, the side windows are completely retractable. The doors open forward, even in the closed versions.

The vehicle is located with a minimum purchase price of 11,000 Reichsmark for the full body version in the upper middle class, an understatement with a monthly wage of a worker from 100 to 200 RM. The (usually male) buyers often have a title. Who is driving self, is already been viewed with doubt, at least with limousine and Pullman. Mercedes has a lot to do with special needs, but slowly comes out of the crisis with the support of the car-friendly policy of the Nazi government. 05/12
