 50 years 911 engine
It is an example of the continuity and development simultaneously. Who would have thought that this engine from 1963 would once develop more than three times the performance? No, in this case the charge (since 1974)
and the race use are disregarded. This applies to the pure use in the series as naturally aspirated engine.
It retained its location behind the rear axle up to today (2014). Since 1988, it also drives, optionally, the front axle in the series vehicle. Shortly before the turn of the millennium it has lost an important recognition feature, the
air cooling (see table below from 1996). Despite a smaller displacement is immediately achieved a greater torque at lower rpm.
Development of displacement* |
1963 | Bore * stroke | 80,0 mm * 66,0 mm | Displacement | 1.991 cm³ |
1969 | Bore * stroke | 84,0 mm * 66,0 mm | Displacement | 2.195 cm³ |
1971 | Bore * stroke | 84,0 mm * 70,4 mm | Displacement | 2.341 cm³ |
1973 | Bore * stroke | 90,0 mm * 70,4 mm | Displacement | 2.341 cm³ |
1974 | Bore * stroke | 95,0 mm * 70,4 mm | Displacement | 2.994 cm³ |
1977 | Bore * stroke | 97,0 mm * 74,4 mm | Displacement | 3.299 cm³ |
1989 | Bore * stroke | 100,0 mm * 76,4 mm | Displacement | 3.600 cm³ |
1993 | Bore * stroke | 102,0 mm * 76,4 mm | Displacement | 3.746 cm³ |
1996 | Bore * stroke | 96,0 mm * 78,0 mm | Displacement | 3.387 cm³ |
2003 | Bore * stroke | 96,0 mm * 82,8 mm | Displacement | 3.596 cm³ |
*These are not all occurring values at the engine of the 911.
Gone are the days of single cylinders and cylinder heads, which are only joined together by the housing of the respective camshaft. The ohc arrangement with rocker arms and each two valves was already abandoned with
the air-cooled engine. No more blower with generator inside. Gone also the interior heating, improved again and again and nevertheless never good.
Much earlier, the engine has lost its Solex triple carburetor with each a float chamber and diaphragm pump. This begins with the introduction of the 911S with Weber carburetors and will, due to the U.S. emissions
legislation, continued with a Bosch injection pump. Then came the K-Jetronic from 1973, later as KE.Jetronic with lambda control.
This was a difficult time for the 911. The catalyst, dictated by the export to America swallowed performance. The unleaded gasoline, due to it introduced has no longer the usual knock resistance. At the hasty displacement
jumps this time in the table above, you may see how hard one tried after the change to petrol with lower octane, nevertheless to keep the level of performance. The consumption falls by the wayside naturally.
Oil is a theme in the history of the 911 engine. It has always been designed as dry sump lubrication, of course, belongs thereto a container which initially only holds 9 liters, later considerably more. The is made accessible
through a flap behind the door from outside, what ends in a fiasco. Ingenuous Porsche drivers fill in fuel there. The flap soon disappears.
Still a difficult time arises with the appearance of the 924/928. The once with the Carrera even getting out of hand engine range will shortened. The SC appears in 1978, which summarizes all 911 naturally aspirated
engines. Only the turbo is above since 1974. The engines are becoming more complex with air compressor and modified exhaust system for the United States.

*Without GT models with turbo models (from 1974)
Explore the unprecedented development of performance. Finally this results in 257 kW (350 HP) at the suction motor, which corresponds to 2.7 times and 412 kW (560 HP) at the turbo, more than double. With the
changeover to liquid cooling arrives adjustable camshafts, adjustable valve lift, resonance supercharging and direct injection. 01/14
