The car is presented at Geneva 1977. Whether the fiftieth anniversary of the company or not, it is difficult to develop the relatively square, two-door sedan to a coupe without shortening the wheelbase. This can only masters of their trade, e.g. Nuccio Bertone and his colleagues in cooperation with the chief designer at Volvo, Jan Wilsgaard. They shorten the roof and lower it. The C pillar becomes broader and decorated by a symbol with a crown. The B-pillar falls away. The first only available exterior paint silver is exclusively to get with vinyl roof. In addition there are with (somewhat wrinkled) leather and exotic wood dressed doors and rear side panels. If you still lifts the rest of the equipment level, customers possibly could imagine to pay more for the same car with less interior space. Altogether this Volvo is still thought, more than the others, for the American market. They say. that the car is influenced by local car brands, such as the Lincoln Mark 4 from 1970. Nevertheless, his future distribution is limited.
Surprisingly the fine wood design does not continue in the dashboard. Probably for cost reasons this is taken from the 260er series. Also the low roof has consequences for the interior. Despite low-mounted seats the seat backs of tall people must be set oblique. Overall, rear then remains not much knee space and view from the left side window. The engine is actually a cooperative development with Peugeot and Renault. The European version unfortunately has at this time no catalytic converter with Lambda control.
