Basically a Tesla is a strange vehicle at least before the appearance of Model 3. It is somewhat reminiscent of the famous phrase 'Jumped as a tiger, landed as a bedside rug'. The company advertises crazy acceleration times, but are they important?
For the city, the vehicles are already somewhat large, ideal for the long haul. But which averages to reach here? The average maximum driven 120 km/h are enough to overtake trucks, quickly thanks to the acceleration.
But in the fast highway-lane the Tesla driver then meets other vehicles of this price category, realizing him as something like an alien. Who pays more than 70000 euros for a car has little time usually. Without traffic jam he does a long distance in less than half the time taken by a Tesla.
A small car on the fast lane would get pardon, but a Tesla? At this point you realize that it is designed more for countries with a speed limit. For California range and charging conditions fit better. In the local cold former can be halved and the latter doubled.
So rather a car for rich dropouts, individualists, do-gooders? 100,000 vehicles sold so far and soon 500,000 per year planned argue rather against, the almost childlike enthusiasm during the presentation of Model 3 favors the affirmation of this question. But even the new model will not lower the fear of missing range, on the contrary increase it, due to lower range compared to Model S or X. 04/16
