Alternator (error analysis)

     bk Simmerath

To find an error in the stator winding, or in the performance diodes, one must generally remove and dismantle it. Indeed, are there alternatives where this can be avoided? One can measure charging voltage and current. Charging voltage e.g., drops if the battery is pretty much fully charged. If the voltage is too low, a look at the regulator is necessary. Although, perhaps the generator performance and the consumption don't fit together. An oscilloscope display of a running generator brings clarity concerning errors inside the generator, and this, without having to take anything apart.

Interruption at the exciter diodes -> almost no charging is possible.

In the above pictures, only a part of the generated voltage is indicated. One must imagine the zero line to be at 14.4 V. Indeed, only the alternating current portion interests us here. This oscillates with 0.43 V, from around 14.2 to 14.63 V. You can establish for yourselves, what the display and the measurement values look like with interrupted plus- or negative diode, by pressing the respective buttons. After such an examination, which also includes cable interruptions, it can be decided whether repairing this particular generator is still worthwhile, also which spare parts are needed and what steps should be taken. 08/11

Voltage drop in the charging cable: 0.4 V (at nominal power)
