Cooling 14 - Summary

Previous page ...

The evaporating fuel and also possibly water injection absorbs a great deal of heat in the cylinder (-> internal cooling).Earlier, the coolant could be circulated without a pump, simply through being heated by the engine and cooled by the radiator.
Air-sream cooling is loud, allows no regulation and is suitable only for smaller two-wheeled vehicles (mopeds). The blower shown here on the crankshaft allows various locations and a thermostatic regulation.
Nowadays, there are hardly any turbo-chargers without intercooling and apart from the problem of the location, it brings only advantages. An amount of more than 60% coolant worsens the frost protection. Only refilling mixtures according to the colour or the manufacturers instructions should be used.
A visual examination for leaks, belt wear and a frost protection amount test is particularly important.Through overheating, the cylinder head can warp. It may remain sealed, or if not, it can still be planed.
Belt-drive: form fitting connection which transfers torque. Needs no lubrication, therefore, has a lower effeciency. It must always be kept tense.
A spring often protects against too much tension. Check for wear and tear.
An even, steady cooling, continual pump circulation without a build-up of air. Gentle thermostatic regulation. Differentiation between high- and low temperature circulation. The engine control device regulates, among other things, the generator- and the after-cooling.
Flow-pumps throw the coolant from the center entrance in a tangential channel. They are not self-priming.The bearings are carefully sealed against the coolant. There are belt- and gearwheel drives. They can also be substituted for by electric pumps.
Various components are summarised into modules, they are made by one manufacturer and are, nevertheless, individually replaceable. The netting is made of aluminium, the water containers mostly from sysnthetics. There one often finds an additional heat exchanger (e.g., oil-cooler).
Cold engine: Coolant heats the engine oil. Warm engine:Coolant cools the engine oil.The stretch material element is connected with the engine cooling output. It slowly opens when the temperature becomes excessive.
