A new Golf provokes still a lot of attention. It continues to be the reference model in the compact class and by the way the most-produced car in the world for some time now, thus having left far behind VW Beetleand Ford Model T. The predecessor is indeed called the sixth but is not really considered to be a new model. That has now changed, to prove easily, despite gentle facelift.

Same price: 5 hp more and better equipment

It is because of the precedence of the Audi A3 not the first, but still the second model which was constructed according to the rules of the modular transverse platform. More information can be found here. It should have become lighter up to 100 kg in certain model configurations. We will simply compare the kerb weights and hope, that thereof really only 12 percent is allocated to savings in special equipment.

Styling only apparently nearly unchanged.

Least changed, the rear end if you compare it with the LED version of its predecessor. The curves of the rear lights are now better adapted to the edges and cutouts. The Golf 6 had to do in the normal version, in principle, with the lights of the Golf 5, although his rear had changed. In the side view attract attention, incidentally since the Golf 4 the parallelism between the rear door cut and edge to the rear part. Now this is continued on the right side with a better designed fuel filler flap.

Styling takes leave of the just round shape.

Incidentally, the small triangle window could be a highlight, so insignificant it may be. Let's see when the first competitor takes up this suggestion. Forward would be to attest great similarity to its predecessor at first glance. But far from it, if you only look at the reversed edges in the hood. This is now significantly higher than the fenders, which perhaps also the air helps to an easier flow around the vehicle. Aso the immediate front looks tidier right down to the spoiler.

Petrol engine blocks from aluminum

It is assumed that the VW Golf has once again become a little more stable, at a slightly reduced body weight. Cross-sections were chosen more skillfully and especially sheets hot recasted according to a new method. At least here it is clear that there really is a new model. Obviously, in the good old steel still are development possibilities without the need to take immediately aluminum or composite materials.

Unfortunately the lightweight rear axle brings no space advantages.

On a dashboard together with the underlying transverse beam can be saved with 1.8 kg only little, already more the seats with a total of 7 kg. At the air conditioner, it is 2.7 kg and enormous 23 kg at the chassis. This could be due to the partial return to the torsion beam axle (of the US-Jetta). The there was, in principle, up to the Golf 4 and nearly unbeatable in its value for money.

Again there is a (mini-) triangular window.

The weight loss of 23 kg is surprising in view of the slight increase. Obviously the meanwhile become slightly larger luggage compartment of the competition was a model here (+ 30 liters). One wonders where growth will go, given the fact, that the current Polo is no longer compared with the Golf 1 but rather with the Golf 2.

Amazingly, the curb weight difference to Golf TDI 2011 is only 23 kg. VW prospectus information: 1318 kg - 1295 kg
* both in Blue Motion version

Astonishing, even though the numbers may not be quite realistic once again, the indicated consumption of the new. The can also be seen at the CO2 emissions. For the nevertheless slightly enlarged model Blue Motion are promised km 85 g/km, what compared to the 99 g/km of the predecessor - now the value for the normal-TDI - nevertheless represents a significant step. VW itself save (yet) the Hybrid by particularly economical diesel engines.

On average, about 14 percent fuel savings ...

The petrol engine gets for saving purpose a cylinder cut-out, to which you can read something here. Unusual to start a new model with the weakest diesel and only moderately strong petrol engines. It used to be those who wanted to be the first to drive such a car to sell to this a considerable equipment at the same time.

No longer stage in the loading space.

Speaking of sales, there is again an increase in the offer of the assistants making our cars slowly but surely to rather idiosyncratic beings, where one wonders whether one can still handle. Important I find the city emergency braking function taken over from VW up for only 555 euros surcharge. My last accident has been a while ago, but this function it would certainly can avoid.

Center console slightly inclined toward the driver ...

One trend is the unchallenged takeover of assistants from the premium class. I remember well, as the precautionary measures have been introduced fo no more unavoidable accident in the S-Class. Now the system has reached apparently the cheapness of the compact class. As you can see, once again, that rich people who can afford the S-class.

Outside clearly structured, high-quality inside.

Otherwise, the list of available assistants would go beyond this page. VW Is particularly proud on the multi collision brake, the probably most frequently occurring errors effectively combated by collisions. Ah yes, the Golf 6 has already had an electronic system, the e.g. at mountain driveaway intervened in the handbrake, so with this Golf the whole mechanism has disappeared. Hopefully the electrical actuation similar without problems in durability.

Many variants will follow.

It was time for innovations in the multimedia sector. This includes the now 5.8-inch large screen, very nicely fitted into the top of the center console. This is almost Audi quality, one meets there. And then the operation. Already approaching triggers functions, wipe across the screen and with two fingers zoom apart topics, Apple says hello.

Evolution, not revolution

After all, the buyers of the Golf 7 do not have to worry about an eventual flammability of the new refrigerant 'R1234yf' because it still uses the 'old' R134a. The manufacturer can more calmly counteract the question in the case of the Golf because its type testing is carried out by late 2010. Since the car was already defined in all details. Interesting how much time still is necessary in spite of the rapid development series.
