Liquid Cooling

Function

In comparison to the four-stroke engine, the two-stroke engine is clearly more demanding for the cooling system. On the one hand it is higher strained because of twice as many power strokes, on the other hand the cylinder is more complicated due to several channels, being more prone to going out of shape. Also, the lubrication system does not contribute - in contrast to the four-stroke engine - to the thermal absorption.

How it works

Nowadays the liquid cooling is quite common in combination with two-wheeled vehicles. The cylinder on top in the picture displays, besides the large-sized liquid volume, that this cooling delivers the heat quickly to the surrounding air. How otherwise would you explain the cooling fins outside? Also the liquid cooling is, in the end, an air cooling. Its technology was taken over by the car. Simple cooling systems took over the thermo siphon cooling stemming from the childhood days of the car. Mostly, however, a flow pump provides for the circulation, and the thermostat valve regulates it. A double-strike valve preserves the system from too much pressure and at the same time a loss of the coolant. Even an electric radiator fan exists for large-volume engines. 06/08
