Auxilliary Drive
Function
At the latest, when looking at the gearbox, one can see the multiple demands which can be made on a truck. The ladder extention systems on fire-trucks are spectacular, but also the transportation of liquid cement
places high demands on the drive. Compared with these tasks, the almost everyday demands, like the pumping of fuels or heating oil are hardly noticed. This, by the way, is where the RPMs come into play, not only
their speed, but also their constancy, demands a lot from the engine.
How it works
To be able to understand the above shown auxilliary drive, the function of the truck gearbox should be quite clear. An important point is, that this is mounted on the output side onto the
countershaft. In a gearbox with a pre-selection group, two gear ratios are even possible for the auxilliary drive. The auxilliary drive shown in the above figure even offers the possibility of flanging on two shafts at the
same time. For this purpose, a cover which hides the other connection, is found immediately below the uppermost shaft. 12/09
