Air/Liquid Cooling

Solution

The designer must not always have to decide between either air cooling and liquid cooling. The above cylinder of a racing engine has cooling fins, while the cylinder head has cooling channels running through it. Obviously the advantages were so great that one could afford to use, as far as weight was concerned, both cooling systems. Here again, the superiority of the liquid cooling, which replaces, with relatively high effort, the air cooling in the cylinder head, becomes clear. This confirms distinctly, that the cylinder head gathers the most heat. The Nikasil coated cylinder comes from the Porsche Turbo 936 and was welded together with the cylinder head. The six-cylinder gave a performance of 471 kW, (640 HP) and won in Le Mans in 1981. 09/09
