Hypoid Gearbox
Function
The Hypoid-drive enables the transfer of a greater torque with the same construction volume, decreases the noise and lowers the construction heights of the differential shaft in a standard drive-train (front engine,
rear-wheel drive) (smaller differential shaft tunnel/lower centre of gravity).
How it works
The axle of the bevel wheel is placed lower than that of the crown wheel. This is called the axle-offset. The gearing is especially slanting. The bevel gear functions almost like a worm gear. The gear-wheel flanks do
not mesh into each other by rolling, it is more like a strong sliding movement. The especially high pressure on the cog flanks requires a special gear oil (hypoid oil) because, otherwise, the oil film will break down.
