2020 VW Touareg eHybrid

It is the last dinosaur at VW, but not in the group. VW cars have long since lost their longitudinal front engine with pure rear-wheel drive. And only one elaborate four-wheel drive of this kind, from the engine to the rear to the gearbox and from its output to the front and rear axle. Circumstantial and probably only necessary to offer V6, V8 and W12 as well.

The next smaller one, the Tiguan, already has transverse engine, also available with front-wheel drive only. VW is in the process of abolishing the Diesel V8, too, so it only has V6 in its range. Could their performance also be achieved with transverse engines? In principle, yes, but this is not possible because Audi is dependent on the Touareg with the Q7/8 and Porsche with the Cayenne and both also offer V8 petrol engines. So it will remain for a while longer with the MQL kit with four-wheel drive.

At VW, despite the two hybrid models, you can see the necessary reticence towards the two more expensive siblings model families. Although both Touaregs have the same engine power in terms of combustion engine and electric motor, the system power in the Touareg R is nevertheless stated to have been increased by 60 kW (81 PS) and the torque by 100 Nm. And these are the dates at which the Cayenne E-Hybrid starts in the first place, almost 5,000 € more expensive. For its coupé you can add 5.000 € more.

Both VW services are also available as Q7 with an for Audi amazingly moderate price premium. Porsche then pushes this to almost infinite heights with the V8 Turbo, which doubles the price of the Touareg R. Amazingly, all these hybrid models have the same electrical equipment, both battery and electric motor. Not very flattering for the more powerful models, whose pure electric range is likely to shrink well below 40 km.

So this is the biggest model from VW. Inside, of course (at extra cost), it can be equipped with everything the brand has to offer, e.g. the Travel Assist with distance and lane keeping and automatic braking. Nothing works analog anymore, but a smaller centre display is possible. It's really too bad to go into the wilderness with such a model, where probably only the transmission power of the tyres will have a limit, apart from the body dimensions. However, these can be adjusted higher and the torque can be distributed variably, up to 70/80 per cent forwards/backwards.

Is the extra charge of over 12,000 euros for the R-model worth it? Certainly not because of the increased system performance in terms of software. However, you would have to check the Atmosphere and Elegance features. At least the R model includes matrix lighting and a four-zone air conditioning system. In addition, there is a panoramic sliding/tilting roof, the top navigation system in the 'Innovision Cockpit' and everywhere in the interior the blue seams, which tell you that you did not save money when ordering the car. But both of them have a forward-looking hybrid strategy.
