2023 VW T-Cross

The T-Cross is the smallest and is referred to as a compact SUV by VW. It has also been sold 1.2 million times worldwide since 2018 under the names 'Tacqua' and 'Taigun'. After five years, it's time for a facelift. Since the largest SUV in the group has also just been renewed, a comparison may be interesting.

The old problem of designers, on the one hand to emphasize the affiliation of the model to the brand through similarities and on the other hand to emphasize the importance of the individual through differences. Both now only have a prominent clasp in the grille, at least in the higher equipment levels.

On the T-Cross it merges into a corresponding element of the headlights, on the Touareg it continues below the headlights. This creates more optical height, but even more width. Added to this is the clear tripartition within the headlights.

The T-Cross is 2.7 cm longer than its predecessor.

On the Touareg, the downstand beam extends to the outermost edge. All ribbed individual surfaces are larger, the overall design is more smooth. The T-Cross is the other way around, because the coloring also breaks through the uniform image. And then the bar at the bottom.

One wants to attract attention while the other doesn't need it. Car bodies have always been designed more conservatively in the higher classes. But the connection between the two within the brand is not neglected either. Almost everyone identifies in each case the VW.

Almost inevitable with a facelift: new colors and modified rims.

Very nice that the outdated halogen headlights have disappeared in the basic version too. Of course, those with matrix light fit in with the better equipment. Crazy, the VW logo can also be projected onto the ground through the exterior mirrors, as was probably the case initially with the Mini.

With the picture above, we stay at the lighting outside and point out the striking graphics of the rear lights, which are partly taken from the ID models.

It would be good if the extra shown here could be purchased individually and not hidden in a large and expensive package. Because a folding backrest of the front passenger seat can be quite helpful not only for sporty, but also for technically gifted people. Not quite fitting, but also very practical, the 20 kilograms more load on the trailer hitch.

Inside, nothing has changed in terms of the dimensions and, for example, the sliding rear seat bench, but the dashboard with better haptics and digital displays, which in the middle is now even free-standing with a diagonal of 8 or 9.2 inches. The steering wheel has escaped the introduction of slider technology, which is now being reversed again. It could stay the way it was.

The new one is a good €4,400 more expensive than in 2018, but with improved equipment.
