He was born at the Pacific Ocean. The California design studio should discover fashion trends in time. In 2006 there are 20 people, employed by VW in the middle of a former hangar in Santa Monica. They bring a lot of ideas in the concern. California is not really to compare with the rest of the United States. Even to a car this part of America demands so special requirements, that many automotive manufacturers there maintain similar studios. Last year there was designed a spectacular three-wheeler for the car show from Los Angeles caused a stir, earlier the Microbus with memories of the first VW bus. Conception at the car show Los Angeles - click to enlarge!The biggest ever success of the California design studio undoubtedly is the New Beetle, which even is created at the old location near the desert. In 1994 it was introduced as a Concept 1 and attracted so much attention that is initially planned for the USA a mass production. The task is not easy, but the round silhouette of the Beetle must be slipped over the front-wheel drive technology of the Golf. It succeeds almost without special designs. Only the cooler of the Golf/A3 can be not integrated with the best intentions.
Like the different paintings show above, the New Beetle is rather to understand as a design object where the practical usefulness moves into the background. It's bad enough that additional bucklings are added as bumpers because of the crash tests for the series production. Fortunate that the original concept quite freely handle the topic Beetle. It's like the film adaptation of a good book. The failure is almost guaranteed if you adhere too much to the pattern.
