Beetle engine in detail 2
Being held by the grey bracket (in the center and on the right) the engine has been turned upside-down. The bottom plate of the crankcase with short cooling fins, has been removed to a large extent. In the center, is the inlet tube of the oil pump with its cover, under which a sieve was the sole oil filtering. It was cleaned when the oil was changed as part of the servicing work. The oil pump itself consists of two gearwheels, (seen below the grey bracket) which are protected against falling out by cross-bars. During operation it was sealed by a cover held by four screws.Relatively little can be seen here of the camshaft which drove the pushrods (painted yellow). On two of the pushrods the protective tubing is still mounted.
