Volkswagen 2021

There is something to report about VW again. The most exciting news, of course, is how they got around the CO2 penalty tax. Not entirely, according to reports, but fines in the small three-digit million range are probably considered to have been got off lightly once again.

It is to be expected that now all larger vehicles with combustion engines will reach the customers and the buyers of e-cars will still have to wait, e.g. for the ID.4. Do we have it now? No, because there is still the fulfilment of a promise, but as so often, especially with price announcements, that doesn't quite work out yet either.

Because, the ID.3 is now available with the smallest battery. No, not for less than 30,000 euros, but a little more. No, the engine now has kilowatt what the previous one had in terms of horsepower. That is still plenty, although VW reveals that the battery capacity is a net value, but not the power, whether peak or continuous.

If the latter, then that is still plenty. Whether the promise will be kept at some point by further slimming down remains questionable. The savings effect is probably too small. Everything else is is already at the lowest possible level. Compared to the 58kWh model, the DC charging power has also been halved.

Even alternating current flows more slowly into the car, whether three-phase or culminating single-phase also remains questionable. Given the ID.3's most recent consumption figures, especially in winter, it must be clear, that 200 km range at 130 km/h on highway is not achievable, even in summer, assuming 10 to 90 per cent charging.

The direct competitors are more expensive.

Perhaps for relatively frequent slow journeys. That's when the term city car, which we don't like, reappears. After all, the price, including the bonus, comes within 1,600 € of the Golf 8, which has now passed the 20,000 € mark. For that you get 44 kW (60 hp) more and half a tonne extra, but unfortunately only a good quarter of the range.

The other manufacturers of e-cars don't change this, but perhaps the configurator of the ID.3 could have been designed a little differently. For example, there are only two models with 77 kWh, which are almost 8,000 € apart. May be they don't want potential buyers to run out of frustration to Tesla with less battery capacity but a great charging network.
