 2025 Rivian R3
The Rivian R3X, please click! |

All Rivian vehicles are similar due to their unusual front end. And the future R3 will be no different. We had trouble getting used to it at first, but even back then, we never would have thought we'd one day consider the VW
Golf an icon.
We'll get to VW later. First, let's look at the R2, the bigger brother of the R3, characterized by a high hood for a large frunk, wide doors even in the rear with plenty of comfortable seating, and yet still slightly shorter than
Tesla's Model Y.
That, along with the versions with rear, dual, and triple engines, as well as a base price of approximately $45,000 in the USA, are the facts that the R3 has to live up to, plus a range of 430 or 480 km. The cubic shape allows
the rear windows, including those in the tailgate, to be completely retracted.
And now the R3, which the manufacturer describes as a 'crossover' with plenty of ground clearance. Otherwise, it's smaller, but with the same platform, but a good 12 cm shorter wheelbase. Although the rear window
cannot be lowered, it can be folded up separately.
It is still unclear whether all the seats can be folded down to create a full lying area like in the R2. The R3X doesn't have a dual-motor version, but 'only' a triple-motor version. Its performance is indicated by its prominently
protruding wheels.
Rivian is having a run at the moment and is apparently so attractive in the eyes of the VW board that they have apparently downgraded the Carriad somewhat. It is the change that has already taken place in Rivian models,
from complex to zone-specific software and thus also hardware.
Allegedly, only seven control units are required.

There's a joint company that's supposed to ensure, for example, that a VW model starting at just under €20,000 will be launched in 2027, running on software adapted by Rivian for VW. Whether this will affect the entire
R2/R3 platform seems questionable due to its size.
The collaboration between both companies and Mobileye is also striking. |
