The success of this vehicle is founded on a rule change. The rules of the formula 2 were introduced to the brand world championship at that time. Thinking ahead, the company Ferrari, who was dominant in the formula 2 at that time, substituted an economical four cylinder in-line engine for the fuel intensive V12. The engine is not developed by Colombo, like the V12, but by his former assistant and new boss Aurelio Lampredi.

The four cylinder engine is already quite atypical for Ferrari; the cubic capacities that were established a little later even more so. Ferrari develops at the same time a 2 litres and a 2.5-litre version. Later there is even a 3 litres version (735 S). This means almost double the cubic capacity per cylinder, even comparing this engine to today's Ferrari-V12s. The vehicle definitely benefits from a low weight. Of course, also this model is successful in the racing sport. One question remains: how did this in very low volumes produced model receive the epithet 'Mondial', indicating that it is a global vehicle?
