1964 Ferrari 158 F1
Much new technology is installed in this car, which John Surtees brings from the sixth race success and both him and Ferrari 1964 World Championship. Two of the races he wins even, the GPs of Monza and
at the
Nürburgring. What is new is the design of the car with an aluminum monocoque and the engine as part of the chassis. One relinquish almost entirely on the formerly standard metal frame. This saves weight, but
make
higher requirements on the stability of the crankcase.
The second novum is found in the mixture preparation, which takes place directly over an injection pump in the cylinder. The system is used the first time in races in Mercedes 300 SL. In total, the engine has
10% more
performance than its V6 predecessor. Again 11 kW (hp) are obtained in the 512 F1 in the distribution of the same displacement at 12 cylinder as a V with 180° bank angle, probably mainly because of the
possible higher
engine speed.
