1999 Audi RS 4 Avant

The SR4 seamlessly connects to its predecessor SR2 (video above) of 1999. It was the strongest Audi ever built and, in principle, only as Avant available, likewise the RS4. But after its production end there was a next model only four years later.

Instead of the cooperation with Porsche also with the brakes (video above) the developement of the first RS4 is supported by Cosworth. The base is this time not an inline-five, but a likewise charged V-six. With a half-liter more capacity, the power increases by approx. 50 kW.

It is quite astonishing that the Audi as a station wagon even makes a Porsche 911 (996) of the same year serious competition. According to the accelerations stated by the manufacturers, it is slightly superior to all Carreras except the Turbo. Faster are the Porsche only, because they are adjusted at a higher speed, the Audi 'already' at 250 km/h despite speedometer up to 310 (picture above).

If the purchase price of the RS2 was just under DM 100,000, it is now almost DM 30,000 more, which is still below the price of a 911. A lot of money for a 'station wagon', but still cheaper than any 911. It is just the performance, which lead to the purchase. The originally limited quantity had to be doubled. 05/17
