Caliper Gauge
Assignment
In production, gauges are generally everyday instruments, but not only there. They allow only a decision between 'usable', 'scrap' or rectification. In a mass production series, the producing machine itself examines
each part after manufacturing, and corrects itself automatically. In smaller series, and in repair-jobs, the person doing the job must do this. What ever the case may be, it is important. If a wrong measurement is
discovered too late, the repair costs are distinctly higher. Under no circumstances at all, may a part which lies outside the defined tolerances, leave the workshop/factory.
Function
The caliper has two sides, a good side (right) and a scrap side (left). The latter sometimes is marked in red. The diameter of the shaft may not be larger than the good side. Therefore, this must fit aound the shaft. To
ensure however, that the shaft diameter is not too small, it is also determined, that the scrap side, which indicates the minimum, does not fit aound the shaft. If however, it does, the shaft is then to be rejected. 07/09
