Five-step Reduction Gearbox (light commercial vehicle)

Coaxial gearboxes with aluminium-casings and auxiliary drive

This is a typical five-speed gearbox found in light commercial vehicles. It can transfer considerably more than 500 nm of torque, enough for somewhat larger 4 cyl. and for smaller 6 cyl. diesel engines. These are flange-mounted on the left, on the right, through a dry-disc joint, the cardan shaft with central bearing follows. This gearbox is suitable only for drive-chains with a front mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, a standard for utility vehicles (not vans).

Straighter and broader gearing, somewhat larger construction

One can recognise the larger transferable torque, compared with the passenger car, by the cog and gearwheel width, and by the not quite as helically cut gear-teeth. The noise insulation is not that important here. Classically, the selector shafts are arranged on top and the sliding clutches are also all on the main shaft. The modern casings are made of aluminium alloy. Specifically in the utility vehicle construction, the pay load reducing dead-weight counts for a lot. Quite nondescript, is an auxiliary drive that can be seen at the front. This can be used, e.g., to drive the pump of a heating-oil truck. 09/08
