With the negative numbers, above combined with a temperature scale, the spectrum expands for the first time. Here the minus sign is probably more a signpost than a fixed location.

Want an example? Imagine a minus sign in front of a variable. Then it is good to virtually turn around and look in the direction of the minus sign. No matter what value the variable has, it is the default. If the variable and its sign is in brackets with a minus sign in front of it, you have to turn around again, i.e. reorient yourself.

- (-a)=a

Plus times Minus equals Minus.
Minus times Minus equals Plus.

(+a) · (+b)=+ab
(+a) ·  (-b)=- ab
(-a) · (+b)=- ab
(-a) ·  (-b)=+ab

This results in a fundamental difference between plus and minus brackets. The former only makes sense, for example, to protect plus/minus calculation from multiply/devide calculation. The minus parenthesis additionally reverses the signs all variables in the parenthesis.

(-a + b -c)=-a + b  - c
- (-a + b -c)= a  - b + c

Plus divided by Minus gives Minus.
Minus divided by Minus gives Plus
