 Hydraulic steering system
At this driven through-drive axle it should already become clear, the hydraulic steering is designed for relatively slow moving 'pack animals' that have a high payload. So not only trucks, but also construction
machinery, tractors and forklifts come into consideration. A little typical of this kind of steering is the knob on the steering wheel in the picture below.
If an older tractor is rebuilt, the old steering can be maintained in principle and the hydraulics used only to support. Case of the hydraulic or electro-hydraulic steering system described here however, such
solutions should be excluded because described elsewhere in this book.
As you can recognize in the picture above, it's the already well-known compilation of container, pump and work cylinder. Because, already in many vehicles which come into consideration for such a steering,
already a hydraulic system is present, this can of course be used. But be careful, for example, braking and steering system is not allowed to be dependent from the same pressure supply without adequate
protection.
Indeed, it steers actually the hydraulics. Should still be present a mechanical connection to the steering column, it is used exclusively for feedback. Larger steering forces are not transmitted through this. In the
electro-hydraulic this connection is completely absent, and is given by sensors to a control unit.
Plenty of room takes up also the energy saving meanwhile. If an existing system, for example, of a forklift is tapped, then it must be ensured that the normal functions such as lifting heavy weights are not
weakened while steering. Here helps either an own circuit, a so-called priority valve and/or a needs-oriented control of the pump pressure.
