Centrifugal Pendulum

kfz-tech.de/PKp4

Some people try, albeit imperfectly, to design the inner part of the clutch disc vibration-damping The others are more effective, but also more expensive, with a dual-mass flywheel. ZF’s version also includes a gear train, which others say is unnecessary.

Centrifugal pendulums are available from LuK (Schaeffler). You can skip the long-winded explanations about the need to adjust spring constants here, because there are no springs. Above, you can see one of the four metal plates distributed around the circumference, each in one of its two end positions.

A weight, which can be assumed to be point-like, thus moves from one endpoint to the other along a (semi-)circular path. In this case it had to be lifted slightly and then moved to the other side. It then reaches the final position on its own. During operation, centrifugal forces should cause it to remain pushed outward in the center position until torsional vibrations cause it to oscillate slightly, or, as the rotational speed decreases, somewhat more strongly, back and forth around this center position to compensate for those vibrations.

As can be seen from the accompanying text, coordination with the leaf spring is important, since the centrifugal pendulums are located on the secondary side, that is, the gear-side portion of the dual-mass flywheel. However, the presence of such a flywheel is not a requirement. It could therefore soon be used as a more economical option in combination with a one-piece flywheel on the clutch disc.
