Release Bearing

The release bearing is designed to transmit force from the release fork or directly (see image) to the rotating clutch assembly (diaphragm spring).

Release bearings must absorb larger axial forces. In the past, a small amount of (clutch) play would cause the vehicle to come to a stop during normal driving when the clutch pedal was not depressed. It only turned with when the clutch was engaged. Thanks to better protection against wear, today's release bearings can always rotate with it. In hydraulic clutch actuation the slave cylinder may be integrated centrally into the release bearing.

Important

Holding the clutch down for an extended period, for example, before a red light, places unnecessary strain on the release bearing, the clutch disc, and the crankshaft’s axial bearings.
