Would you have thought that this Ferrari is considered the most expensive used car in the world. One of the small series of 37 Grand Tourismo Omologato is to be auctioned at Pebble Beach achieved the record value of USD 48.4 million. In the meantime, the price had fallen to five-digit DM values, for example.

What you see here is not a 250 GTO at all, but one of three 330 GT Speciale from 1964, so named because it is equipped with a four-litre V12 and has 265 kW (360 hp). This type represents the endpoint of the development of the 250 GT. It began around since 1956 and its special feature is its consistent success in the GT class.

Who could demonstrate such technology with V12 and aluminium bodywork at the time? However, the GTO is an answer to the dwindling fame, because nothing lasts forever. The first successor of the GT was initially not developed by Scaglietti, but at Ferrari plant under Bizzarrini. You can literally see the improved aerodynamics despite the shortened wheelbase. On top of that came a more powerful engine.

And where does the famous 'O' come from? It stands for the Italian translation of 'homologation', which was actually necessary for the new model. The 100 copies required for this were not even achieved during the total runtime of the model. But somehow Ferrari managed to convince the world automobile association of the superfluousness of the renewed homologation.

So as a GTO the Ferrari still has a chance, although it is one of the last cars in this class with front-engine and rear-wheel drive. The mid-engines will ultimately finish them off. Meanwhile the newcomer is also built again at Scaglietti. Above a real GTO, but with closed air intakes.
