  Chinese goods?

No, the picture does not show a Chinese product. The cable may be perhaps available cloned from Chinese production too, but this one is genuine. More on that later. It's hard to believe the prices at which reading devices from China are offered. You may have had a similar experience with oscilloscopes. Of course, people here try to criticize them, but this is only partially justified.

Anyone who considers or needs to buy such a device should have a fair amount of patience or, even better, a willingness to learn. At these prices, you can't always expect a hotline with knowledgeable telephone operators, not to mention language difficulties. There are people who expect the included CD to have an explanatory effect. If it doesn't because of the lack of an autostart function and then the CD shows 0 bytes, this clientele will give it a very bad rating and try to get the purchase price refunded by sending it back.

At least it is rarer to find an instruction manual that has been translated directly from Chinese into German using Google, for example, although Google has also gotten better. But you can be prepared for the fact that, for example with the device shown above, important steps such as for inserting the drivers are not mentioned or are not mentioned in the right order. Some clever people have managed to offer this task to IT experts for a cheeky 40 euros, but overall it remains a problem until the software is running and the connection is established.

That sounds a bit too optimistic again, because you have to differentiate between diagnosis, i.e. reading something out, and coding, i.e. entering something, not to mention the possibility that it is offered but not adopted. How do I ensure that such a device can really change the coding of injectors after successful installation? Difficult, but not impossible. In the case of the device shown above, it was possible to go through the customer reviews on Amazon and there was actually one that mentioned successful recoding.

It is easy to understand that this whole procedure becomes too much, with the sometimes long trial and error process and the constant doubt as to whether this Chinese product is any good at all. Some people also want to make better use of the time spent on it. For them, there are generally accepted tools derived from professional devices, such as downloadable software and hardware. The latter looks like a cable with a shorter and a longer plug, but cannot be bought for just 50 euros.

The manufacturers also have some blame, because it is quite difficult to see through devices that can only be divided into a cheaper device for diagnosis and a more expensive one for coding. For example: from Ross- Tech you can only buy HEX-V2 with a cable connection and HEX-NET for wireless operation. HEX-CAN USB is a cheaper but outdated device that only reliably performs its function for vehicles up to 2011. At least you could still use it to examine as many vehicles as you wanted.

With the new devices, you have to choose between three, ten or an unlimited number of vehicles. If you choose only three vehicles, which is not uncommon, you save over 100 euros, but if you want to upgrade later, you have to pay well over 200 euros, even though the changeover only takes place via the Internet or email. The argument of good support, which of course really costs a lot of money, doesn't help here either.

It is almost more complicated to stay under the margin of a vehicle that is counted. For example, you can view and delete the error log and read out measured values. Of course, changing the injectors is one of the features that counts. So it is best to take a course first and think carefully about what you want to do with the device before spending 400 to 500 euros. In addition, used devices are sometimes offered, but with the risk of already 'expended' vehicles.
