Risks of the software 4

Google in the car, the world will be watching. We can provide an example, not of Google in the car, but of Google in our daily work. And that’s alarming enough, so much so that you can imagine the difficulties even if you’re sitting in your car.

Google has become a behemoth (Krake); we’ve mentioned this before, but haven’t gone into detail yet. By the way, as we're writing 'zur Krake', we've just noticed that Word does not know this word in German. What the heck is wrong with these two words? Just another behemoth.

By the way, "Krake" in quotation marks is acceptable. And the more unconventional our beloved language becomes, the more Word tries to keep us 'in line'. By the way, that’s where our fears about AI should be focused, not on the possibility that it might become too intelligent.

“Bringing people into line” is really more of a trait of ignorant people, and that’s truly something to be feared. But what exactly is Google being accused of? Put simply, the prompt asking you to please log in. Yes, we, too, failed to recognize the danger at the time.

We were just surprised that a browser would require us to log in. We should have been more alert even back then. But that's just how people are: even if they don't understand it, they do it anyway. By now, we don't even know anymore whether we could have used Google Chrome without logging in.

We've been using Microsoft for ages without activation. It's going well, apart from a few minor setbacks. But back then, we were only keeping a critical eye on Microsoft, not Google. It would be naive to believe that this modern-looking browser could pose no threat.

We started to get a little suspicious when Chrome frequently refused to apply changes we’d just made, such as to images. That happens quite often here, for example, when new cars are presented. No, it kept the old image, or didn't have one at all, and we searched like crazy for the error.

You probably know why, and that's probably why Chrome was, and still is, faster than the competition. You must clear your browser data; otherwise, Chrome will continue to behave this way. A little more work for website developers.

You see, there's that parenting style again. You should finish the website completely before uploading it. This micromanagement, while perhaps justifiable due to a lack of knowledge or responsiveness on Microsoft’s part, is simply imposed on the user without explanation.

That would be bearable enough if this authoritarian behavior, which is also familiar from Tesla in some respects, hadn't long since taken hold in other areas as well. We were on Google, or rather, we were tempted to open an account. Why on earth didn't we realize the danger behind it?

This chapter is the only place where we have the space to describe our specific situation. Maybe the effects aren't quite as bad for you. The fact is that creating and managing so many websites requires a huge number of programs and access points.

Just take the manufacturers, for example, who all unnecessarily require an email address and password, which, fortunately, aren’t processed through Google. But when it comes to apps and data usage, we’re also far exceeding the norm, and unfortunately, Google is included this time.
