  BMW 2 - 3200 CS

BMW 3200 CS 3.168 cm3 (82,0 * 75,0), V8, 9,0 : 1, 2*OHV, aluminum cylinders, 240 Nm 3600 rpm, 118 kW (160 HP) 5600 rpm, 4-speed, first steering wheel shift, later middle shift, double wishbone, rigid axle, torsion bars, disks / drums, servo, 7.00-15/185 HR 15, 4,85/2,84/1,76/1,47 m, tank 75 l, 1.500 (450) kg, 200 km/h, 603, from 29,850 DM, 1961-1965

Exactly the same squabbling with the auxiliary lights as with the 503. They had to be because one was afraid that customers would have them installed later and thus endanger the front, but it was already acutely endangered.

In the preparatory sketches, Bertone suggested round additional lights, fifty-fifty with indicators and a bumper that was recessed accordingly, also in the middle for the license plate. One saw the effort to keep the damage caused by the additions rather low. But it was of no use, because in the end they came along as rectangular with additional indicators and very ostentatious.

But after all the rest of it was relatively filigree for this imposing coupé size. Note the delicate C-pillar if the B-pillar is missing simply, which left space for the BMW emblem with a clever kink. What were the cars of yore light- transmissive, even the coupes! After all, Franco Scaglione (1951-1958), Giorgetto Giugiaro (1959-1965) and Marcello Gandini (1965-1978) alternated one after the other at Bertone.

No, the 3200 CS was not born under a lucky star, because it was placed as a prototype at the 1961 IAA in Frankfurt like a wallflower next to the Star 1500. Although It wasn't more expensive than the 503, but it was still way too expensive. Although it looked more Italian, it was made of steel sheet instead of aluminum sheet.

What was defaced at the front, the rear made up for it. It was perhaps even better liked than that of the 503. And there was proof of that, because if you take a closer look at the taillights, so you should be able to assign these to the 02 models that will appear later without difficulty. They are always attributed to Hahnemann, but he probably only changed nuances.

Nevertheless, it was of no use to the 3200 CS. Not even the later refinement with real leather and a wooden dashboard. Before more people, e.g. in Germany, could afford it, it was already disappeared. Because its production made way for the increasingly successful mid-range car. Only the 'CS' in the name reappeared later and got great honors. Only the 'CS' in the name reappeared later and got great honors.

Here the later wooden instead of the sheet metal dashboard.
