Opel and off-road vehicle were not necessarily seen as one unit 25 years ago. And yet the General Motors group conjured such a thing out of its depths. It was called 'Frontera' and was largely based on parts of the Japanese subsidiary Isuzu. Basically these were the models 'Rodeo' and 'Amigo'.

Opel respectively GM was thus one of the first companies to recognize and react to the emerging trend towards SUVs in Europe. The Frontera was based on the two Isuzu pickup models. These were manufactured quite conventionally: ladder frames with double wishbones and rigid axles. In addition to the shorter two-seater, which is open at the back, there was a longer four-door station wagon with tailgates that opened each up and down.

Only three stars in the NCAP test

For customs reasons, the cars intended for Europe were manufactured in Great Britain, first in Luton and later in Ellesmere Port near Vauxhall. Apart from the 2.3 liter diesel and the 3.3 liter V6, the engines came from the Omega. In 1998 the B version was given a facelift, which should also improve the quality. Initially, the Frontera had reached the top of the registrations in its category thanks to its low base price, but then fell significantly.

A total of 285,000 automobiles in Europe.

As you can see in the video below, the Frontera had good terrain characteristics, especially in the shorter version, but no cross-locks. After all, you could switch on both off-road gear and all-wheel drive while driving. The 2.2 liter turbo diesel with direct injection and two overhead camshafts introduced in the B version was helpful in saving fuel.

When with the Antara as sister model of the Chevrolet Capitiva, the successor came onto the market in 2006, the SUV boom for Opel was finally over. Despite being equipped with petrol engines up to the V6 and various diesel engines, the model manufactured in South Korea and St. Petersburg remained a slow seller.
