For light utility vehicles, this front axle is unbeatable as far as simplicity is concerned. It is however, not suitable for fast transporters. This is clearly indicated by the somewhat old fashioned drum-brake.
Function
The axle beam itself, is a stub axle which is connected on either side by four screws or two U-bolts, to a leaf-spring. In this state the suspension is almost complete. There is also the option of a damper. Now, to the steering. The drop-arms on each front wheel are connected to each other by a rigid front axle. The connection with the steering gear is made possible by a very specially formed lever on the left front wheel. Here, through a bar with a ball-head, coming from the (front-wheel drive) up front mounted steering gear engages and pulls an additional lever downwards in a left curve, and pushes it upwards in a right curve.
