Double Wishbones

Here you can see one for the front axle in its classic form. It doesn't matter whether the damper is integrated into the spring (strut) or both are arranged separately. But what becomes very clear in the picture is the suspension of both wishbones on the frame. The suspension strut is also mounted here.

The fact that both wishbones have the same length may also be related on the solid construction of the frame. The second picture above shows the main advantage of shortening the upper compared to the lower wishbone. Regardless of whether the suspension is compressed or decompressed, a camber of almost zero (solid lines) always results in a negative one (dashed lines).

This type of suspension can also be combined with torsion bar suspension and even with (transverse) leaf springs.

The double wishbone axle is therefore mounted further down, which makes it more suitable for heavy vehicles. Another advantage is the distribution of forces between two wishbones compared to one at McPherson. There is no contradiction in the fact that formula racing cars (picture below) also make use of it, because they completely lack any support in the upper area.

The double wishbones can be fitted at the front and/or rear. Originally invented by Chrysler at the beginning of the 1930s, for a long time they were only installed in the front, usually together with a driven rigid rear axle. As the picture below shows, it can also be used in the front as a driven axle.

In the second half of the last century, the ball joints significantly simplified the design and, together with the rubber bearings, made it maintenance-free. Previously, three simple hinges (see picture below) were required, one at the end of each wishbone and one from the connection between the two to the wheel hub (king-pins).

Of course you don't have to steer in the back or only to a limited extent. This has changed the possible arrangement of the parts of the wishbones. One has sometimes be arranged more longitudinally than transversely. The double wishbones have become multi-links (picture below). 09/19
