An air-cooled cylinder head is displayed above. It should be technically simple to produce at a reasonable price and keep pace at the same time with the relatively high performance level of modern single cylinder engines for two-wheelers. The noise is limited. Influences from outside, as for example hose water, must be taken into account. Although used more often in earlier times, the blower air cooling is no longer used.

How it works

Trying to solve or at least diminish the above described problems the engineers started experimenting with different materials and their proportions. Aluminium-composite casting and Al - Si connections were introduced earlier in two-wheelers than in the passenger cars. Cooling fins become thicker and thicker the further you move inwards and thus contribute substantially to the stability and to a better balanced heat development. Modern air-cooled two-stroke cylinders nowadays display for the same material a clearly increased thickness. Cooling fins, becoming thinner towards the outside, are also easier to pour. With the help of a black colour coating, energy can also be led away via heat radiation. Links between the ends of the cooling fins can clearly lower the noise level. 06/08
