Assignment

The visco-static clutch has the advantage of being able to connect two shafts having varying RPMs, in a particularly compact implementation. It is an alternative to the self-locking differential gear between two driven axles, it can however, also replace the differential lock on one axle.

Function

Two sets of metal discs (lamellae) are alternatively, solidly connected to the casing and to the drive shaft. One set has e.g., perforated- the other slotted discs. The hollow space is filled with silicone oil, whose viscosity allows, at low RPM differences between the two disc sets, a certain amount of freedom of movement. Large RPM differences heat the oil and lead to a connection beween the two sets through fluid friction. The axle drive which is linked with the casing transfers torque to the driven shaft and thus, onto the non-powered axle. 12/10
