Turbo Charger - Repair

Possibly new value for half price

Because it is inserted in more than 80% of the passenger car diesel engines (situation in 2007), its repair slowly becomes lucrative for firms. Up to now chargers are just exchanged when they are defect. If you do not keep on going, in spite of a defect that is on its way, a repair can absolutely be worthwhile. Naturally, we assume that the normal servicing was done to avoid defects. One of the servicing requirements is the timely exchange of the air filter and for this mode of operation cleared engine oil.

Recognise a defect on time, and have it repaired

How does a defective charger become apparent? It helps to pay attention to the usual noises from the engine compartment, because turbochargers absolutely contribute to the sound. However, strong differences in noise point to essential mechanical defects, meaning repairing is not possible any more. Another recognition sign is black-blue smoke from the exhaust and raised oil consumption. In this case at least you know what happened to the oil you had to add. With the turbocharger the wave sealing can be defective or even the bearing can have play, requiring quick action, because the longer you wait, the more it is going to cost. Loss of power due to a blocked shaft would be the next possibility and almost again hopeless.

As long as primarily the shaft is concerned...

The dismantled charger is sent to special companies which disassemble it and examine it carefully. Defective parts are exchanged individually, intact parts are cleaned by sandblasting or other processes. The casing is also cleaned what makes it difficult to distinguish it from a new turbocharger. The careful assembly is important. The screws are tightened gradually and in steps of torque and enough lubricant for the first minute. Rotary parts go through a balancing procedure with revs up to approx. 180.000 1/min. 05/07
