Extra Drum Brake for Parking

Function

This design ought to combine the advantages of the brake disc with these of the drum brake. For the operational mode the brake disc will be used, for parking predominantly the drum brake. Here a main characteristic of the drum brake is used, its self reinforcement in combination with a small actuating force. The presented technology is mainly used for heavy and fast vehicles.

How it works

In the center of the disc brake a drum brake is placed which is operated exclusively by a push pull cable. The small diameter is sufficient for holding the vehicle also on a steep surface and in case of an emergency brake, as there will not be much heat development. Unfavourable however are the extra expenditure and the increase of the non spring-mounted masses. For this reason the disc brake with integrated hand brake has been developed further and replaces the additional drum brake in lighter vehicles.
