Adjustable Camshaft(s) 2

Double row roller chain with adjustable camshaft for V engines

Figure 1 shows the components of the modern engine control unit of a V engine. There is first of all the double row roller chain. It features guide bars as well as clamping bars to take away any possibility for faulty or noisy movements. In the cylinder head the timing chain each drives an idler which has its effect on both camshaft sprockets. An ingenious distribution of the gear ratios limits their size and thereby the engine height. By now, the possibility to adjust at the same time intake and exhaust camshaft is accepted.

Pulse width modulation shifts oil pressure

The pictures 2 - 4 show the possible twists of intake to exhaust camshaft compared to their respective driving wheels in angle degrees in relation to the crankshaft. Possible are approx. 40 ° for the intake camshaft and 31 ° for the exhaust camshaft. By clicking you can adjust the extreme values and for the outlet side you may select intermediate values. Of course, such changes take effect just with a running engine and in exactly defined operational modes. For this, the camshaft driving wheels must be bipartite and must contain hydraulic oil, operating in the here visible five chambers against springs. The pressure circulation lubrication supplies these chambers, controlled via a paced magnetic valve (pulse width modulation). 05/07
