Audi 1,2 TDI 3L

The best 3-Liter project so far

Unfortunately, the car is no longer produced, although it manages to approach the 3-litre concept best (3 liters of fuel consumption per 100 km). In contrast to the 3-litre Lupo it is produced roughly cost-covering. The A2 car body already consists of aluminum. It is just optimized with additional covers, e.g., in the underbody and at the wheels to reduce the fuel consumption further. Consequently, the drag coefficient sinks from 0.28 to 0.25 which allows the vehicle to reach nearly 200 km/h on the speedometer at steep hills.

Transport four persons at 3 litres/100 km

The complete drive is identical to that of the Lupo, but the interior is not. It does not seem this way from the outside, but the car does offer enough space for four 'normally' large adults, without too much luggage. It makes the vehicle well suited for everyday life. The comfort is elated, except for the engine noise. However, the chassis is by no means tuned softy, allowing driving pleasure in spite of small tires.

Limited extra charge

Why is the A2 not successful in the end? At first there is of course its odd shape, which takes a lot of people a long time to get used to. Then there is the high price which is met by rather concealed qualities. Also, the necessity of managing the '3' before the comma has needlessly raised the costs. For example, the 3-litre version has a 21-litre tank which can be substituted for the original 34-litre tank at a surcharge. The weight difference in the tank is obviously important? Besides, it is difficult to replace the normal tires, let alone to find winter tires for this car, because it is not possible to mount steel wheel rims.

Lots of little savings from aluminum and omitting

135 kg kerb weight compared to the normal version, not even just saved. There lacks the power steering, which one does not miss really. Even more important are the not foldable rear bench seat and the reduced payload. Aluminum is found mainly in the chassis components as in the 3 liter Lupo. Also, the cylinder block of the three-cylinder diesel engine is made of this material and it makes not very quiet. But there are additions such as the sequential gearbox and the start-stop automatic. One would do even rather without the special tyres which are probably designed more for smooth running than traction and comfort.

Opel's more promising approach

Opel offers at the same time a less strongly modified Astra which manages 'only' 4 litres of fuel consumption, yet with a much more moderate surcharge. The vehicle reaches clearly higher sales rates. The car industry slowly gets to understand that there are very few customers who are willing to pay heavy surcharges for fuel saving measures, with the exception of diesel engines and perhaps the hybrid drive. In general, the average fuel consumption of all cars must be lowered, and not just that of a few single show-off cars.
