Body development 1

Function

The above displayed body of the Lamborghini Gallardo, fully manufactured from aluminum, stands in contrast to the below discussed mass models. It contains a low percentage of automatic manufacturing, probably causing an inferior quality as compared to the mass production. Furthermore, its usage of space is not contrived and for most of us this car is unattainable.

How it works

Customers are becoming ever more individual. Naturally, this is reflected in their demand for cars. Car manufacturers in their need to satisfy the customers try to offer as many models and modifications as possible.
In spite that power and torque are frequently increased, the average customer is more interested in design, safety features, and comfort. Having to cope with the individual taste on the one hand, and cost efficiency on the other hand, car manufacturers use the same body platform with wheel suspension and drive in combination with various different shapes. Also other labels within the same company make use of the same body platforms. One of the consequences of this strategy is that average customers for example have to cope with too large wheel cases on their vehicle, because the same model is offered with broader tyres, too. The rear suspension often on fits for front wheel drive as well as all wheel drive. Since the wheelbase is no longer unique for one platform, the four doors Coupe might use the same platform as the seven-seats Van. Only the Convertible stands out as it needs additional reinforcements.
For the body this has consequences. In the past the car-design already changed about twice as fast as for example the engine, nowadays there are so many variants on the basic model that it is not possible to introduce all of them at once when introducing the new basic vehicle. Thus, each year a new variant is introduced, while the customer who desires a specific variant may have to buy the old model, because the variant is not yet available with the new platform.
The requirements for comfort and safety features have to be taken into account while designing a new body. The body has to cope with the increased weight of comfort features on the one hand, and exhibit a substantially increased stability, especially for the flanks of the car.So it must sustain to a large extent an impact in front with 64 km/h and only 40% cover, and should not be impressed by a pillar hitting from aside with 40 km/h. In particular the heads of the passenger and driver should not be left with major harm. Also the aerodynamics should be improved with a smooth underbody and small clearances to offset the increased front part, creating more space in the car. A recent topic is improved pedestrian protection, and a future one will be the upcoming laws requiring a recycling of almost hundred percent.
