More weight at almost the same engine performance

The shape has changed fundamentally compared to the predecessor. The car has its widest point at the belt line. The front and rear windows will be larger. Front the windscreen is not so much rounded, but obliquely placed. At the front is created a certain family resemblance to the newly introduced LT. The underbody is lowered in favor of more cargo volume by 10 centimeters, despite less space requirement its weight is lower and its stability increased. Together with the newly designed front the car offers significantly more passive safety.

The driving characteristics were already with the predecessor very well for a truck. Nevertheless a new front axle will be introduced. The steering wheel has become toward the driver's seat clearly more oblique because it leads completely forward to an angle gear and only then to the newly have been added gear rack with significantly reduced turning circle. Back real trailing arms now operate and no more torsion bars. The gravity of the vehicle is shifted much more forward by displacing the spare tyre before and the tank behind the front axle. This was also necessary because the predecessor is difficult to enjoy in crosswinds.

Two air-cooled engines are available. Their design has changed as well compared to the predecessor. They are similarly constructed as flat engines similar to the types 3 and 4. This allows the engine compartment to be smaller again and to increase the height of the rear door. To the acquired 1600 there is now a two-liter, which is derived from the 411/412. This can also be combined with an automatic transmission. However, the engine room is now accessible only from above. The oil level can still be controlled behind the fold-away license plate.

Actually, the message is just that there are now both engines in flat construction, thus the blower is arranged directly on the crankshaft. But behind this is a series of measures, the then stretch ultimately the maintenance intervals and reduce their extent. So the engines now have an oil filter, although not in the main current, but in the short-circuit. Also, there are hydraulic tappets, which make unnecessary after a basic setting the readjustment of the valves.
