The ID.3 largely determines VW's appearance at the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt. Only the number '3' can be clearly assigned to its name. It symbolizes VW's first fully designed electric car as a worthy successor to the Beetle and Golf. The two letters in front of it stand for intelligent design, identity and visionary technologies.

They always point out that the interior is larger than that of the Golf with similarly compact dimensions. The planned base price 'from 30,000 Euros' is OK, but it is bad that it is very often called in connection with 'up to 550 km range'. The two do not fit together, of course. Also the new is supposed to be 'worldwide the first balance CO₂-neutral car'.

So even after the performance questions remain unanswered. In any case, the so-called modern design has not been exaggerated with this vehicle. Inside it looks a bit different. There it not only screens, but prevails otherwise also something like Tabula rasa. Compared with the dashboard, the door panels are almost luxuriously equipped. However, the simplicity of the flat center console is rather appealing.

Only window regulators and hazard warning lights are operated via so-called switches. These should be small movable surfaces which, when actuated, not only trigger a certain function, but also reflect this actuation tactilely by their position. Whether this condition is fulfilled by the remaining switches may be doubted.

And the fact that the low position of the batteries has a positive effect on the driving dynamics can soon no longer be heard, because this clearly does not apply to their higher weight.

The configurability of ID.3 1^st provides a glimpse of the future surcharge list. With the average battery capacity and different charging structure, this costs around 10,000 euros more. Additionally you get DAB+ digital radio, seat and steering wheel heating, front armrests and 18 inch aluminum rims. However, a rear view camera, keyless access, ACC distance control, 19-inch, LED light all around and matrix light in front are subject to another surcharge.

Of course, as usual with VW, higher equipment is also connected with a changed design inside and outside. For even more money, there will be a large panorama roof, a special head-up display, an upgraded sound system and help with tracking. In addition, the almost unavoidable 20 inches, as a matching balance to comfort seats. 09/19
