Larger, yet not nicer

According to the sales prospectus the Golf II 'is larger, longer, broader, higher, more comfortable, stronger, faster, more economical, more comfortable, and more valuable than its predecessor. And finally it is stated that it is nicer than the Golf I. All the statements are correct, except for the latter. The beauty remains with the predecessor. It could have been predicted: the successor of the exciter is a soother. It inherits a few more characteristics, like the wide C pillar and the seats that are excellent because of their design. In addition there is now a more civilized diesel engine.

Definitely more ride comfort

Seriously, the practical value is terrifically increased in comparison to the old model. There is enough space in the rear and in the luggage compartment. The outside measurements and, above all, the weight are still tolerable. If you take into consideration that this vehicle has the same base like the beetle, the big advantages of the front-wheel drive becomes evident quiet clearly in the interior. This continues in the relatively large engine compartment. There are enough options, including a stronger variant of the diesel engine. The Golf has also turned down in noise volume. A combination of axle beam and sub frame and the long fifth gear make it possible. There is a feeling of driving a car ranging half a class higher. The new, more generous dash board and its illuminated switches fit in. For the first time not only the displays are illuminated during a night journey.

Significantly more driving comfort

Quite seriously, the value in practice has increased enormously compared with the old. Enough space on the rear seat and the rear luggage compartment. The external dimensions and the weight are still tolerable. If you consider that this car has the same base as the Käfer (Beetle), can be seen alone in the interior the great advantages of front-wheel drive. This continues in the comparatively large engine compartment. There are also plenty of Choices, even a more powerful alternative to the diesel engine. The Golf has also become much quieter. A combination of axle beam and suspension subframe and a long fifth speed make it possible. One has the feeling to move a car that is located half a class higher. It fits the new, more generous dashboard and its illuminated switch symbols. For the first time not only the indications shine during night driving.

More cumbersome, but safer

Quite as fast as with the predecessor one can not speed at the corners with the Golf II. For this purpose the standard suspension is too soft. But thereby the driving comfort is also increasing. For a car of this weight class the new VW cushions really well. In curvy country roads, you will feel not uncomfortable, rather with rapid highway driving. The rear axle now has rubber bearings, which by different hardness front and rear countersteer them for unequal spring compression. Then there is the now in all models standard power steering and good design of the seats. In hardly a comparable car people with long torso feel more comfortable. Even after its clearness, we will yearn for with the subsequent models.

Significantly improved corrosion protection

Certain difficulties with the Golf I have helped the successor to intense corrosion protection. These include the use of galvanized sheets, and the new inner fender made of plastic, a real blessing for the lifetime of the body. Against the often early rusting boot lid at the previous model now helps wax which often still leaks after 20 years. Who does not know the two typical and easily recognizable - when driving afterwards - wide vertical stripes on the lower rear end plate.

Additional luxury and sports versions

Instead of one luxury equipment, there are now two. Thereby the new, third stage, both content and price in itself. Once again increased seat cover comfort, plus carpets and a center console. The more powerful diesel can be ordered via a specific equipment variant a little in the GTI look. This is the entrance to the special surcharge policy, which will bring it years later to the distinct possibility of doubling the purchase price. But still it is not so far. The consumer has only be used to lots of extras. This is why there are constantly Golf models with additional names, where most frequently required equipments be offered more cheaply as a package. Up in the picture 2, such a car can be seen.

Automated manufacturing

For the factory is important the change of production compared to the first Golf. In addition to increased development on the computer, which goes far beyond the until then practiced finite-elements method, the new specially scores due to its 16% reduction in production demand. And this for a whole bigger car. VW specially builds for this the hall 54 which represents the highest level of automation in the world in this time. Even belts are mounted by robots and tensioned. However, a worker is there hardly to see. There are people who swear by manual labour. Just the Golf 2, as one of the most trouble-free and longest lasting car in its class is a good advertisement for the automated production. A robot still provides more consistent results, even on Mondays.
For people who self repair is still a additional advantage. The accessibility of the parts is better. So you can unscrew the entire front end and for example replace easily after an accident. This also simplifies the development of the power drive.
