VW scandal - the fourth
No, you should not smile at the new 'airflow straightener'. The problems appeared with the introduction of the hot film air mass flow sensor. For the first time not the complete air mass was registered but only a part of it. It was called measuring in bypass. For a long time the BMW-fourcylinders had trouble with this measuring method. Some air mass was registered twice. In this case, it's about so far underestimated turbulence.
Strange how quiet it has become to this scandal. No other manufacturer is officially accused, although measurements indicate numerous transgressions, no competitor pointing his finger at VW. All assert their cars to be clean. Component suppliers and companies testing automotive parts have sometimes their employees condemned to silence. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority has approved apparently the not particularly profound procedures by VW.
Opel announces voluntarily software updates in terms of NOX for 450,000 vehicles. BMWs are always accessible from the manufacturer, thanks to built-in SIM cards. Some time ago they updated their software against theft via radio network. Probably it can be handled as well as with the engine software. They don't have to deal with noisy product recalls.
Only customers flip out sporadically. Some of them desperately disappointed complained to their VW dealers. But they misunderstood, exaggerated the procedures to be taken and offered exchange to another VW. By this the customers realised the loss in value of their cars and were driven to competitors. The loss in value did not deminish but they can say 'No more VW!'.
Smart clients hurry through the sales department directly to the workshop. They ask for an appointment end 2017. Why? Because it's the definite end of the whole procedure and they want to profit by the 'faulty software' as long as possible, in order to have less fuel consumption and no lack of performance.
Small-time criminals are already planning to offer next to the speedometer resetting the re-exchange of the software in recreation areas. Anyone ordering both gets discount. The prices of old EA189 controllers slowly increase, so do the prices for the hard-/software of motormanagement controllers to be up- or downloaded.
Will that all be checked in the general inspection? Can not really, because that must indeed be the same for all vehicles. In addition, it should not be more expensive for VW owners. But what is not paid, will not be examined by the inspection authorities. But promissed, one country can not be lulled in this way, USA. 12/15
